Girne American University
Girne American University GAU is a non-profit private university in Kyrenia, a city in the Northern Cyprus. The university was founded in 1985 by Mr. Serhat Akpinar as an institution of American-style higher education and recently celebrated its 35 anniversary. The American University is dedicated to making American model learning opportunities accessible throughout life and to making them challenging and relevant to a diverse population of young adults. Its aim is to make possible an education that is at the same time both accessible and excellent. It does this through exceptional management of the University operations and resources, innovative delivery systems, student services and relevant programs that are learner-cantered, success-oriented and responsive to technology. In support of its mission, a program has been initiated to transform all courses into digital format. This effective format for course presentation is a practical expression of one of the University’s core values – that of providing access to higher education. The format helps students to complete their programs expeditiously, thus reflecting another core value of speed. Another aspect of speed is the ability to make adjustments in the curriculum to keep abreast of developments in each field. In this way The American University is able to offer new programs promptly when new needs and opportunities present themselves. This responsiveness supports the core value of relevance. Even as GAU works to provide programs that are current and relevant it also strives to provide them at an affordable price so that the student receives value. In GAU Research Centers and Laboratories, advanced researches are performed in the fields of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology. The International Center for Heritage Studies (ICHS) is a research and design center founded within the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Fine Arts (established since 2012) and is working on historical, landscape and archaeological research and the restoration project for the Acheiropoietos Monastery in Cyprus. The annual International Symposium on Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Applications (ISEAIA) is a platform for researchers, practitioners, developers and educators to share their experiences in the fields of engineering, artificial intelligence and their applications in. CAUMME, Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism in the Mediterranean and the Middle-East, is a series of conferences organized by AUMME. The 2nd CAUMME Conference organized by Girne American University, yildiz technicaluniversity and Qatar university and in 2014. The organization of a biennial international symposium in different areas of architecture and urbanism constitutes the main academic activity of CAUMME series of conferences. The first CAUMME international symposium was held in 2012 at Yildiz technical university. The main motivation of the second CAUMME international symposium was on the concept of Post-Professionalism. The goal of the university since its foundation is to provide comprehensive Higher Education of American standards for students from different nationalities in North Cyprus. Everything has been done on the GAU campus to make students feel comfortable. This is a modern educational building with bright spacious classrooms, where lessons are held, as well as a garden, a pool with a fountain, and, of course, dormitories for living. GAU provides dormitories for its students on campus – three for girls and one for boys. European-class dormitories are not far from the university. The bus service runs from early morning until nine in the evening, running from each dormitory to the university, as well as to the city center and back to the university. On the territory of the university campus there are more than 20 clubs for various sports interests: tennis, basketball, volleyball, horse riding, bodybuilding and ballet. The university has an excellent material and technical base, its own radio station and satellite communications, Internet access from any computer at the university. GAU laboratories, educational research centers, libraries are equipped with the latest technologies.
